Partial & Permanent Disability (PPD)

Partial & Permanent Disability (PPD) refers to a medical condition where it affects the worker from fulfilling their job responsibilities. The worker got injured or involved in accidents but still can do some of the necessary tasks for a living.

For example, a factory worker had an accident while handling a piece of machinery at his workplace. As a result of that incident, he lost two of his fingers. He now has a permanent disability but is still able to perform other tasks.

In these situations, the worker must be able to demonstrate that their injury was caused by their job obligations. And was closely tied to some aspect of their work in order to be eligible for compensation.

The following are a few examples of work-related injuries that could allow an employee to qualify for partial disability status:

For Partial and Permanent Disability (PPD), the level of disability is used to determine the insurance benefit. The table below shows the percentage of the amount of insurance compensation that the employee will receive based on this partial and permanent disability scale of indemnity.

Total & Permanent Disability (TPD)

Total & Permanent Disability means that the disability must be total and permanent. And the person can never sufficiently earn or obtain any income as a result of that.

For instance, the worker develops an occupational disease that causes a medical condition. As a result from that, the worker is deemed unfit to work and no longer able to gain any income.

Another example is a lorry driver who was involved in a traffic accident and suffered a brain injury that resulted in paralysis. Due to his condition, he is no longer able to work.

Total disability also can be because of natural or accidental causes. Example of conditions that fall under this category includes:

There are specific criteria used to determine the compensation amount. Where the insured will be assessed on his or her ability to perform the daily task. Examples of the activities of daily living are shown in the table below.

ActivityDefinition
TransferGetting in and out of a chair without requiring physical assistance.
MobilityThe ability to move from to room without requiring any physical assistance
ContinenceThe ability to voluntarily control bowel and bladder functions such as to maintain personal hygiene.
DressingPutting on and taking off all necessary items of clothing without requiring the assistance of another person
Bathing/
Washing
The ability to wash in the bath or shower (including getting in or out of the bath or shower) or wash by any other means
EatingAll tasks of getting food into the body once it has been prepared.

The differences between Partial & Permanent Disability and Total & Permanent Disability

It is important to know the differences between Partial & Permanent Disability and Total Permanent Disability as both have different compensation amount.

The worker that has Partial & Permanent Disability injury is expected to eventually go back to work again. As their injury is considered partial, they are expected to perform in a limited capacity. Meanwhile, those that have Total & Permanent Disability injuries are not expected to go back to work. Their disability makes them unable to earn a living.

Therefore, someone who is entirely disabled will receive greater benefits during the course of their accident compared to someone who is only partially afflicted and can still perform some of their job obligations.
